How to Change the Battery in a Lexus Key Fob

Man opening car with key fob

One of the main advantages of opting for a new Lexus vehicle is the incredible technology that it offers. A fan-favorite feature of many Lexus models is keyless entry. Keyless entry allows you to unlock or lock your vehicle without having to manually insert the key into the lock. But, over time, the key fob for the keyless entry system will need to have a Lexus key battery replacement.

When it’s time for a replacement, you may experience issues with locking and unlocking your vehicle during your Holmdel adventures. This can be frustrating, but fortunately, it’s simple to replace the Lexus key fob battery. Today, the service centerat Ray Catena Lexus of Freehold covers how to change the battery in a Lexus key fob, and we’ll even go over how to reduce the key battery depletion!

How to Know It’s Time for a Lexus Key Battery Replacement

Depending on the Lexus vehicle you’re driving, you may notice an alert message or an audio indicator that’ll let you know it’s time for a key fob battery replacement. However, there are other signs you can look out for as you’re driving around Colts Neck that’ll indicate it’s time for a Lexus key battery replacement. Some of those signs can include:

  • You have to be closer to your vehicle to use your key fob because the proximity detection covers a smaller area.
  • You can’t see the LED indicator light on your key.
  • Your Smart Access system or push-button start isn’t operating correctly.

How to Change the Battery in a Lexus Key Fob

Of course, we’d love to have you in our service center to replace your Lexus key fob battery. However, it is a pretty simple process if you’d like to try and tackle it in your own Old Bridge home. To begin, all you’ll need is a new key fob battery. Most Lexus models will take a CR2032 lithium battery, but we recommend you reference your owner’s manual for specifics. You can also visit our Lexus OEM parts center for help with finding the right battery. With that out of the way, here are the four simple steps for changing out the battery:

  1. Release the metal emergency key from the key fob.
  2. Using the tip of the metal key, carefully begin separating the two halves of the key fob. You should see a small notch where the emergency came out of where you can use the tip to split open the key fob casing.
  3. Carefully remove the old battery.
  4. Place the new battery in, keeping note of the positive and negative orientation.

If you’re having any issues, just schedule a service appointment, and we’ve got you covered!

How to Make Your Lexus Key Battery Last

Although your key fob may last a long time between battery replacements, there are things you can do to reduce the key battery depletion. We recommend you store your key fob away from your vehicle when possible. If your key fob is close to your vehicle, it’ll constantly try to connect, thus, using more power.

Additionally, carefully store your key fob so that you’re not accidentally pressing any buttons and using up all of its battery. Aside from those ways to reduce the key battery depletion, you can actually set up your key fob to stop receiving passive radio signals. Here’s how:

  1. While holding down the LOCK button, press the UNLOCK button twice.
  2. You should see the electronic key indicator flash four times, indicating that you’re in battery-saver mode.
  3. Press any button to get the key fob working again!
